THE
MICHIGAN PARKINSON INITIATIVE (MPI) 
Since 2000, MPF has been a partner in a collaborative
effort with the neurology departments at Michigan
State University, the University of Michigan,
Wayne State University, Henry Ford Health System,
St. John Health System, and William Beaumont Hospital
to create the Michigan Parkinson Initiative. In
2000, a grant was obtained from the state of Michigan
through the Michigan Department of Community Health
(MDCH) to conduct clinical and educational programs
throughout the state. Grants have been provided
by MDCH for the fiscal as further seed money to continue this valuable
project.
These programs consist of multidisciplinary second
opinion clinics, community educational forums,
physician and other health professional education
programs.
This unique set of both clinical and educational
programs taken to local communities throughout
the state is the first of its kind in the nation.
The model we have developed is being viewed as
one that can be extrapolated to other conditions.
Programs
Multidisciplinary Second Opinion Clinics - Each spring/summer, two clinics are held in different parts of Michigan. This consists of a 3-hour appointment where an individual (and family) is seen by a movement disorder specialist, speech and language pathologist, physical and occupational therapists and a nurse. A report is sent to the referring physician and the patient. Treatment is not provided. Applications must be completed by the individual's physician. Criteria for acceptance in the clinic includes: individuals who are having difficulty obtaining a diagnosis, difficulty managing symptoms, problems with side effects, the need for an assessment for rehabilitation and mental health concerns. Open Forums - Along with the Multidisciplinary Second Opinion Clinic, community education programs are held to educate the general community about the latest in understanding of Parkinson's disease. Frequently these programs are televised to other locations across the state of Michigan.
Symposium - Every other year, a one-day educational program is presented, geared to both health professionals and people affected by Parkinson's disease. Continuing medical education units are provided for attendance. Click here to contact the Michigan Parkinson Foundation.
