EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON'S AND THEIR FAMILIES

Living with Parkinson’s

This education series of six or seven weeks, geared to people living with Parkinson's disease (people with PD, family, friends) was originally created in 1981 by health professionals at Harper Hospital in Detroit. The course, conducted for 2 to 2-1/2 hours once a week, is designed to provide the latest information on what Parkinson's disease is, available treatment and therapies, and coping. One facilitator is available throughout the program and various health professionals provide presentations and discussions. These presenters include a neurologist, nurse, physical and occupational therapists, a speech and language pathologist, and a social worker and/or psychologist. Frequently, the program includes people successfully coping with PD. The current schedule and contact people for this program are:

ORIENTATION TO PARKINSON'S

A 2-hour program designed for those people who are newly diagnosed and their family and friends, intended to orient them to what Parkinson's disease is and what resources there are for them.

Mind, Mood & Body: Nonmotor Symptoms and PD

The Michigan Parkinson Foundation (MPF) is pleased to announce its collaboration with the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF) on a series of four educational symposia and webcasts entitled Parkinson's Science: Innovations and New Perspectives. The series will bring Parkinson’s experts to four US cities, Lansing being the second stop, to discuss the latest advances in research and treatments. MPF welcomes people with Parkinson's, caregivers, families and health professionals to hear the latest updates in PD science - straight from the leading researchers and clinicians in the country.

MPF is hosting the second installment of the series which will take place on Friday, July 18, 2008 in Lansing, MI. The theme of this session is, “Mind, Mood & Body: Nonmotor Symptoms and PD” Join us in person for the session in Lansing or watch for free via LIVE webcast or view the archived webcast for one year after the symposium.
