YOPD Support Group Meeting

Description
The YOPD meetings seem to be quite lively. Members are active and almost no one is shy! The group finds its core activity to be what the name implies -- Support -- for its members and their
care partners. Meetings have covered a wide range of topics, all in an effort to better cope with
life in the YOPD fast lane.

Background/History
The Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease (YOPD) Support Group was started in October, 2002.
Prior to YOPD SG, support groups were organized by geography. The group is the first to be
organized under a common theme.
The YOPD connection gives this group a unique profile. Members are generally younger than
average. A greater percentage are still employed. Members are generally more physically active.
Because they face the initial onset of symptoms, they confront the life questions of the newly
diagnosed learning about the disease and how to cope with it.
Activities
The group’s members live throughout the Detroit metro area. So good group-wide
communications are critical. The team tends to use the phone less, perhaps, than other support
groups. They use written or electronic communication perhaps more often. The team has
frequent mailings, using regular (snail) mail and e-mail.
